Gold pared losses in Asia, within 0.4 percent of its record, on speculation central bank bullion purchases will increase, and as fading expectations about the global economic recovery spurred demand for a store of value. The metal jumped to a record in Shanghai. The International Monetary Fund, which set out two months ago to sell
one-eighth of its gold reserves, is trying to complete the process as soon as possible, the head of the IMF’s finance department said. Earlier this month,
India bought 200 metric tons from the IMF, followed by Mauritius’s 2-ton purchase. Russia and Sri Lanka have also been buying gold.

Gold futures fell by 1.19 percent on the Multi Commodity Exchange on Friday as the metal recorded a steep fall in the overseas markets.
Gold for far-month June contract fell by Rs 203 or 1.19 percent to Rs 16,891 per ten gram with an open interest of 65 lots.
Market men said the fall in gold prices in the overseas markets pulled it down at the futures market.
